Similarity measures

RIW (Relativer Identitätswert / relative identity value): Measures the percentage of pairwise (binary) match of two measure point profiles. Main assumption: all 216 compared linguistic types “taxates” are weighted equally.

GIW (Gewichtender Identitätswert / weighted identity value): Measures the percentage of pairwise (binary) match of two measure point profiles according to the size of the areas of the respective taxates. The pairwise match of taxates with smaller areas influences the final result more than the pairwise match of taxates with larger areas. From a geolinguistic point of view, the latter are considered “more trivial” or “less important”. The formula of the GIW – more precisely GIW(x) – contains a parameter x to control the weighting (between 1 [= maximal weighting] and infinite [= minimal weighting]). Here, maximally weighted results are presented.
